Murder Charges Filed in Death of Hanson Man

ARSON MURDER CHGHOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (7/30/14) ― A Manitou man has been charged with murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree arson in connection with the death of a Hanson man.

According to a Hopkins County Sheriff's Office, Douglas Ross Simmons, 45, Manitou, has been indicted on the charges after the presentation of the case to a Hopkins County Grand Jury Tuesday, July 29.

Douglas Simmons is accused of killing James H. Simmons, 51, Hanson, Saturday, July 5.

Hopkins County Sheriff's Det. Jonathon Barnes responded to a request for assistance from the Hanson Volunteer Fire Department at 9200 Roscoe Veazey Road in reference to a home fire. After an autopsy was conducted by a State Medical Examiner in Madisonville, it was determined the victim died from a small caliber bullet wound to the base of his skull.

Det. Shawn Bean with the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office said at that time that a suspect had been determined. However the charges were handed down via indictment Tuesday.

Douglas Simmons is already incarcerated at the Hopkins County Jail since July 6 on charges of alcohol intoxication in a public place, violation of a Kentucky EPO/DVO and first-degree burglary, and was being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
