Ponderosa Madisonville to Donate 10 Percent of Sales Toward Hines' Funeral Expense on Labor Day

donna-hilesUPDATE: From 4 p.m. to closing Monday, Sept. 1, 10 percent of all proceeds from food sales at Ponderosa in Madisonville will go to helping Donna Hines' family with funeral expenses.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/25/14) — The story of a Madisonville woman, whose family is trying to raise funds for her funeral, inspired her former co-workers to hold a fundraiser to help pay for her funeral.

According to Danielle Almon, people that worked with Donna Maria Hines at Ponderosa restaurant in Madisonville decided to hold a “Paint Party in Memory of Donna Hines”, as a fundraiser. The party will be at 5770 Anton Road (the old Anton School building) at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28 at a cost of $35 per person with $10 of that going to Hines' family.

Almon said those wanting to attend should call her at (270) 339-1716 with the shape preference of the item they want to paint at the party.

Hines, 44, battled Multiple Sclerosis for many years but when she could no longer walk, she moved into a nursing facility here in Madisonville in 2012. About a month ago, she suffered an apparent stroke and when she became unresponsive was transferred to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., according to her sister, Saundra Scisney.

Donna passed away Aug. 16 before she could be transferred out of the hospital and placed in hospice care.

Now, the family is faced with her funeral expenses and cannot have a service until they raise at least $3,500 to pay upfront. Donna did not have life insurance, said Saundra. Her three children, ages 12, 19 and 21, can't pay for the funeral, and other family members are reaching out to the community for help. The youngest of Donna's children lives with Saundra.

“We've been trying through social media and Facebook to reach out for help,” said Saundra. “The funeral was supposed to be (Saturday, Aug. 23) but the funeral home is allowing us more time to try to raise the money.”

Saundra said if the family cannot raise the money, there won't be a funeral for her sister.

“We're still so far away,” said Saundra. “We just want to have a service. We need to say, 'goodbye'.”

Donna was a 1988 graduate of West Hopkins High School and worked in the restaurant industry for many years most of them at the Ponderosa in Madisonville.
