EARLINGTON, Ky. (8/25/14) ― A 14-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound at a Sugar Creek Road residence while attempting to fix a malfunctioning 22 cal. rifle around 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug 25.
According to Deputy Troy Gossett of the Hopkins County Sheriff's Department, the weapon discharged during the repair effort and struck the juvenile in the abdomen.
"It was an accidental discharge," Gossett said. "Someone was messing with a weapon, who probably shouldn't have been."
The juvenile was transported via ambulance to Earlington Elementary School, where he was transferred into a PHI Air Medical unit bound for St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Ind. His condition is unknown at this time.
