Free Severe Weather Preparedness Event, Fun for All

disaster preparedHOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (3/14/13) – March is National Severe Weather Preparedness Month and Madisonville businesses and community first responders are working together to sponsor a safety event to raise community awareness for severe weather precautions. The free community event will be hosted this Saturday, Mar. 16 at Lowe’s parking lot just off Exit 44 in Madisonville between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
 
This event will have activities for the whole family, including demonstrations of proper safety techniques and emergency preparedness. The new Fire Prevention and Safety Trailer will be on site to give simulations of tornados, earthquakes, fires, and more. Most of the exhibits will focus on food, medicine and pet safety. Medical Assisting students from Daymar College Madisonville Campus will be performing on-site blood pressure screens. Residents who own an emergency weather radio may also take advantage of the Code Red Weather Warning Alert System and have their radio programmed by one of the ham radio operators at the event.
 
There will be bounce houses stationed on the lot for children to play in, along with the other activities fun activities. Guests may also register for door prizes and raffles.
 
The event is being sponsored by Daymar College-Madisonville Campus, Hopkins County Emergency Management Association, Lowe’s, Commonwealth Broadcasting, S & S Rentals, Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and WEHT meteorologist Wayne Hart, as well as other participating community businesses and organizations. The sponsors are accepting donations for the event, and any contributions would be greatly appreciated.
 
If you are interested in donating, volunteering, or setting up a booth or exhibit, contact Daymar college-Madisonville Campus at (270) 643-0312 and ask for Connie Pullam, who is the Admissions Coordinator or Pat Vincent, Campus Director. The event will be cancelled in the case of rain.
