Henderson Students Advance to National Level at State 'History Day' Competition

Henderson County Schools 300HENDERSON, Ky. (5/9/13) – This past weekend students from A.B. Chandler Elementary, South Middle School, and Henderson County High School competed at the state level competition for Kentucky History Day competition hosted by the University of Louisville. Nearly 700 students from Kentucky participated. Several award recipients will compete at the national level from June 9 -13.
 
Several students placed and received awards. A special thank you for the leadership of Mr. Merrill Punke, Mrs. Tracy Brown, Mrs. Erica Punke and Mrs. Cara Wesner, teachers within the school district who worked with each student on his/her project.

The following students from South Middle School placed in the following categories:
Shelby Pendergraft - second place in History Test
Kaity Ankrom - second place in Impromptu Composition
“Lincoln and Slavery: The Fight for Equality “ by Kayli Sutton and Shelby Pendergraft - Best Depiction of Political History
“Voices of the Holocaust” by Jesslyn Watson and Caroline Mouser - second place in Junior Group Performance
“Civil Rights” by Jacob Swanson - first place in Junior Individual Performance
Rebecca Robards - first Place in History Test
Lizz Lepovsky - first place in History Test
 
The following students from Henderson County High School placed in the following categories:
Ashley Mattingley - third place Senior Impromptu Composition
"Women's Fight to Victory: The Nineteenth Amendment" by Trupte Patel and Caitlyn Kirchoff - second place Senior Division Group Website
"Psychology 101" by Shelby Buckman - second place Senior Division Individual Website
"The Television War" by David Littrell and Logan Thrasher - first place Senior Division Group Documentary
“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” by Emily Lawalin & Courtney Stone – second place Senior Group Exhibit

Those going on to the national level of competition include Shelby Buckman, Trupte Patel and Caitlyn Kirchoff, David Littrell and Logan Thrasher, Watson and Caroline Mouser, and Jacob Swanson.
