Unstable Soil Puts Tech Center on Hold

tech center

HOPKINS COUNTY, KY (12/8/11) - Construction of Hopkins County Schools Career and Technology Center has stopped temporarily so settlement issues at the site can be addressed.

Settlement has occurred at the north end of the building. The extent of this is being investigated by soil structure experts at Terracon, a regional consulting engineering firm with offices in Nashville.

Construction will be halted while the firm conducts a comprehensive study.

“We know that we have some settlement, and before we proceed with construction, we want to be sure we know the cause and what the best solution is,” said Steve Gilliam, assistant superintendent of facilities.

As part of the study, two crack monitors will be placed on all control joints within the structure; elevation levels will be checked regularly; and five borings will be drilled to the depth of bed-rock to determine soil conditions.

At the end of the study, engineers will examine the data, and make recommendations on the best way to address the problem. The total impact on project cost and completion date is not yet known.
