Fire Destroys Family’s Longtime Home, Donations Needed

helpinghand 300HOPKINS COUNTY, KY (12/13/11)—This past Thursday, December 8th, a Madisonville home located at 150 West Kentucky Road in the Grapevine area was completely destroyed during a “fully involved” structure fire.

In the aftermath of the unfortunate catastrophe, the longtime owners of the home, Roy (aka Tim) and Vicki Geary, as well as their son, Brian Geary, realized they were left with little to nothing in the way of necessities.

As Vicki explained to SurfKY News on Tuesday, December 13th, “We’d lived there for almost 25 years and we lost everything we had in the fire. We’re looking for any kind of assistance we can get.”

Though the outcome of the fire was devastating to the family, Vicki mentioned she was thankful that her husband and her daughter’s boyfriend, Josh Niese—both of whom were asleep in the home when the blaze began—made it out without any serious injuries.

At this time, Vicki (a Hopkins County native), her husband Roy (a native of Muhlenberg County) and her son Brian are living at the Days INN hotel in Madisonville, yet are searching for a rental home in the area. As she noted, the family’s insurance provider has stated the costs of the rental home will be covered under their specific policy.

Beyond shelter, though, the Geary family is also seeking monetary donations, common household items (pots/pans, cleaning supplies, etc.), and necessary articles of clothing.

A list of clothing sizes/descriptions needed for each of the family members is as follows:

Vicki: XXL shirts/tops; LARGE-sized jogging pants and/or Capri pants; and SIZE 5 shoes
Roy: LARGE shirts/tops; 36 X 32 pants; and SIZE 10.5 shoes
Brian: MEDIUM shirts/tops; 32 X 30 pants; and SIZE 10.5 shoes

Those interested in helping the Geary family through this terrible hardship, may bring donations to the SurfKY News headquarters in Madisonville, KY, which is located at 1215 Nebo Road/Hwy 41 (directly adjacent to People Plus Inc. and across from Manufacturer’s Supply). Donations will be accepted at any time between 7:30am and 4pm, Monday-Friday. Donations may also be mailed to the SurfKY News address listed above.

Donations may also be sent/delivered to the home of Jamia and Sammy Atkins, who are located at 1405 Grapevine Rd., Madisonville, KY 42431.
