Cadiz Police Warn About Text Scams

smishingCADIZ, KY (3/21/12) – The Cadiz Police Department is warning residents to be on the lookout for text messages that offer free gift cards.

The CPD has received information from several residents today who said they had received these texts messages, mostly claiming to be from Wal-Mart and Best Buy. The texts say to click on the web link provided because they have been “randomly selected” to receive a $1,000 gift card.

This type of texting scam is called “Smishing”, which has capitalized on the growth of and use of smartphones.

If you receive one of these types of text messages, you should do the following:
• Discuss smishing scams with all members of your family who have cell phones, from the youngest to the oldest.
• Do not click on links in text messages or emails offering prizes or free products or trial offers.
• Delete any texts or emails that claim you have won a prize or are eligible for a free product.
• Do not provide personal information to claim prizes or to sign up for free trials.
• Never give your credit card number, social security number or bank account information to pay for fees, taxes, or shipping costs for anything that you may have won or are getting for free.
• Report the phone number to the state’s no call list.

Anyone needing more information should contact the Cadiz Police Department at (270) 522-8369.
