RELAY LIFE 300PADUCAH, Ky. (4/2/13) – Lourdes is recognized as the #1 Relay For Life team in KY, #4 in the world. Out of 182,000 Relay for Life Teams and 5000 Relay for Life events in 22 countries, Lourdes Relay For Life Team holds the #4 fundraising spot for two consecutive years, giving the American Cancer Society more than $452,000 in the last two years.

Not only does Lourdes Relay for Life team hold the #4 spot in the world, the team was also recently recognized as the #2 fundraising team in the Mid-South Division for two years in a row and the #1 fundraising team in the state of Kentucky four consecutive years.

How does Lourdes’ team raise record-setting money each year? The answer is simple: Lourdes Dancing with Stars and hundreds of hard-working, dedicated volunteers. In 2007, Rita Bailey registered dietician and then Relay for Life Team Captain, hit the jackpot. Bailey took note of how popular the hit TV show “Dancing With The Stars” had become and decided Paducah needed a premier event, thus “Lourdes Dancing With our Stars” was born. Since 2007, more than $750,000 has been made from the event for Lourdes Relay for Life team.

Lourdes has been a part of Relay for Life in McCracken County since its inception in 1996. Each year, Lourdes’ team strives to raise more money than the previous year. “This overwhelming support from our community has well exceeded my expectations,” says Bailey. “We have such wonderful support from our sponsors, volunteers – including all the dancers and instructors who give of their time,” added Bailey.

"I am incredibly proud of Rita Bailey and the volunteers of the Lourdes Relay For Life team for their amazing success with this year's Dancing With Our Stars event,” said Stephanie Elder, Area Director, Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society. This year marks the 100th birthday for the American Cancer Society. “With events like this, we have been able to make great strides in the fight against cancer. Together with the support of Lourdes Hospital and its Relay for Life volunteers we will finish the fight and make this cancers last century,” added Elder

Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event started back in 1985. Today, Relay for Life has grown into a world-wide phenomenon, raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer.

Lourdes team plans to walk all night at McCracken County’s 17th Annual Relay for Life on May 31, 2013 at Carson Park.
