traffic accident 300FRANKFORT, KY (10/26/12) – Two Kentucky Transportation Cabinet employees were treated and released from Crittenden County Hospital on Thursday, October 25, after they were struck by a vehicle involved in a work zone crash on US 60 East of Marion this morning.

The driver of one of the vehicles involved and a deputy jailer who was supervising a jail work crew at the site were still being treated at last report. A westbound SUV collided with an unloaded eastbound log truck in the work zone along US 60 in the Mattoon community near the 16 mile marker. The SUV skidded out of control striking a highway crew support vehicle and hitting the two highway workers, as well as the deputy jailer.

Several other workers at the site were missed by the skidding SUV. The truck driver was not injured.

The crash caused a leak in the truck fuel tank, spreading diesel fuel along about a 100 yard section of highway. The fuel spill cleanup kept traffic at the site restricted to one lane for about 2 hours.

The work zone was to allow highway personnel and the jail work crew to clear brush along the roadway.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd credited quick action by highway personnel at the site with getting appropriate help for those who were injured.

According to Kentucky highway crash reports, there were 998 work zone crashes in 2011, causing 4 fatalities and 84 personal injuries statewide. So far this year, highway crash reports indicate there have already been 530 work zone crashes with 5 fatalities and more than 43 injuries across Kentucky.

The Crittenden County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash. KYTC safety personnel will conduct a follow-up safety review of the work zone incident.
