arrest byerCADIZ, KY (10/29/12) – On Saturday, October 27, the Cadiz Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing victim at the Trigg County Hospital.

Once on the scene, officers found that Gary Barker JR, 18, of Hopkinsville had been stabbed in the abdomen during an altercation on Martindale Street in Cadiz.

Officers questioned witness and were informed that 19-year-old Deonte T. Byers of Buffalo Road in Gracey, KY had stabbed Barker.

An interview with the victim led to information stating that Barker was attempting to break up an active altercation when he was stabbed.

Officers went to Byers residence and were told by family members that he had stabbed Barker in self-defense. Byers had obvious injuries on his face and hands consistent with being in a recent fight. Byers was transferred to the Cadiz Police Department for questioning, and was arrested immediately thereafter.

Deonte Byers was placed on house arrest in Trigg County Circuit Court in June 2012 as a condition of bond reduction on charges of complicity to Robbery - Second Degree and complicity to Assault - 4th Degree stemming from a February 2012 arrest in Cadiz. Byers was wearing his GPS ankle monitor when officers made contact with him at his residence after the most recent assault.

The Cadiz Police Department is continuing to investigate this case.
