rotaryL student1MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/28/13) – Four high school students from western Kentucky competed at the Coal Fields Sectional Speech Contest hosted by the Madisonville Rotary Club on March 27. The students addressed a panel of three judges, rotary members, and guests at the Country Cupboard Restaurant, speaking about how peace can be achieved through service.

Kate Hart, representing the Princeton Rotary Club, took home the top prize of $400 and will advance to the West Regional Contest hosted by the Cadiz Rotary Club on April 23, which happens to be Hart’s 17th birthday.

Hart spoke about how an experience volunteering at a leadership conference in Chicago with a diverse group of students taught her that service can bring strangers together and help people set aside their differences.

She said she was very excited that she won because public speaking usually makes her jittery.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to share my message again at regionals,” she said.

Hart will be competing against the Jackson Purchase Sectional Contest winner to advance to the District Final Contest in Louisville.

Phoebe Ross, representing the Danville Rotary Club, placed second and Luke King, representing the Madisonville Rotary Club, placed third. Bronson Pearl, representing the Owensboro Rotary Club, also competed.
