arrestredcentered 300CADIZ, Ky. (5/20/13) – Cadiz Police have arrested two men in connection with the theft of cough syrup from Hancock’s Market on May 4, 2013.
Cadiz Police were notified by Hancock’s Market on May 8, 2013 that they had surveillance video showing two people stealing Delsym cough syrup off the shelves. An employee later found three empty Delsym boxes on a shelf in the store. The cough syrup was valued at $10 each ($30 total).
On May 8, Cadiz Police released pictures of the suspects to the media and posted them on the department’s Facebook page. Within two hours, Sgt. Scott Brown received a tip to the ID of the suspects. Sgt. Brown located the suspects at 81 Lafayette Street later that day and attempted to question them. They refused to speak with police and invoked their right to an attorney.
Cadiz Police continued their investigation and sought arrest warrants for the two male suspects.
On May 18 at 4:15 PM, Sgt. Scott Brown and Officer Roger Knight went to 81 Lafayette Street to serve arrest warrants on the subjects. During this time, two male suspects exited the house through a side window and fled on foot. The officers attempted to catch up to the suspects before losing them in a wooded area on Depot Street.
At 5:30 PM, Officer Knight located and arrested John David Brighton, 18, of 81 Lafayette Street while hiding in the woods. He was charged with Theft under $500 (shoplifting) and tampering with physical evidence stemming from the store theft and one count of second-degree fleeing or evading police. The other suspect was not located in the woods.
At 6:35 PM, Sgt. Scott Brown, Trigg County Sheriff Ray Burnam, and Deputy Mark Nichols went to a residence at 181 Wallace Avenue to question the uncle of the suspects. The resident, Wayne S. Whittingham, 54, of 181 Wallace Avenue, refused to cooperate with police and stated that his nephew was not there. While questioning Whittingham, Sheriff Burnam talked to an eyewitness who saw the suspect enter the residence at 181 Wallace Avenue shortly before police arrived. Armed with this new information, police entered the front door of the residence and located William O. Brighton, 25, of 81 Lafayette Street inside. He was arrested by Sgt. Brown without incident and charged with Theft under $500 (shoplifting) and tampering with physical evidence stemming from the store theft and one count of second-degree fleeing or evading police.
Whittington was arrested by Sgt. Brown and charged with second-degree hindering apprehension. The Brighton’s are brothers and nephews to Whittington.
The female seen entering the store on May 4 with the Brightons was identified and is cooperating with police. She left the store before the thefts occurred and will not be charged.
Cadiz Police would like to thank the Trigg County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in locating and arresting the suspects. They would also like to thank the numerous citizens who provided police with tips and information to the location of the Brightons, both before the service of warrants and while they were fleeing from police.
All three suspects were taken to the Christian County Jail.
