Land Between The Lakes Celebrates 50th Anniversary

lbl 300GOLDEN POND, Ky. (5/30/13) – Join Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area staff to celebrate 50 years of public service beginning Saturday, June 15, 2013.
 
This weekend kicks off a number of events throughout the coming year marking the 50th anniversary of the designation of Land Between The Lakes by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. On June 15, come to the Golden Pond Visitor Center and Planetarium to meet the new Area Supervisor, watch the 50th Anniversary video documentary at 10:30am or 11:30am, and enjoy cake made by LBL’s Brandon Spring staff.
 
Join in the celebration during events at The Homeplace (HP), Woodlands Nature Station (NS), Golden Pond Visitor Center (GPVC), and Golden Pond Planetarium (GPP):
 
June 15
 
• 10am-2pm 50th Anniversary Celebration at GPVC
• 10am-4pm 50th Anniversary Wildlife Celebration at NS
• 10am-7pm Pickin’ Party Old-time Music Festival at HP
• 1, 2, 3, & 4pm Planetarium Shows at GPP
• 5:30 & 7pm Laser Light Music Shows at GPP ~ All seats $7
• 8pm Planetarium Show at GPP
• 9pm Star Party at GPP ~ FREE
 
June 16
 
• 10 & 11am, 12, 1, 2, 3, & 4pm Planetarium Shows at GPP
• 10am-7pm Pickin’ Party Old-time Music Festival at HP
• 11:30am Back from the Brink at NS
• 2:15pm It Fits the Bill at NS
• 3:30pm New to the Neighborhood: Wildlife on the Move at NS
 
President John F. Kennedy designated Land Between The Lakes as a National Recreation Area with the vision that LBL would demonstrate how recreation, environmental education, resource management, and restoration, and make it all work together for the benefit of the region.
 
“For the last 50 years, Land Between The Lakes has been managed to achieve President Kennedy’s vision,” says Brian Beisel, Customer Service Department Manager. “LBL fulfills this vision by increasing outdoor recreation and education opportunities, providing optimal environments for wildlife, and improving ecological diversity. Through this multiple-use management, LBL helps to stimulate the economies of western Kentucky and Tennessee every day.”
 
Invest in the future of Land Between The Lakes by participating in fundraisers organized by the Friends of LBL. Visit www.friendsoflbl.org for more information. The purchase of a 50th Anniversary Button offers discount admission to LBL attractions and supports the LBL Vision Fund, benefitting Hematite Trail and Nature Watch Area improvements. The purchase of an LBL Para-cord Bracelet will help support maintenance and enhancement projects for 500+ miles of LBL trails.
