WKU Names New Academic Advising Director

wku red borderBOWLING GREEN, Ky. (6/3/13) – Russell L. Curley, former Assistant Vice President for Records and Institutional Effectiveness at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM), will be the new Director for the Academic Advising & Retention Center at Western Kentucky University.  He officially begins in this role today.

At Minnesota State University Moorhead, Dr. Curley was responsible for a number of enrollment management functions that included, but were not limited to, the development of the academic calendar, academic schedule building and room reservations, course registration, class restrictions, as well as drop and add scheduling functions. He also managed degree audit records, transfer credit articulation and processing, and coordinating internal and external requests for data while protecting student privacy. Dr. Edna Szymanski, President of University of Minnesota State Moorhead, said: “Russ has been a strong advocate for student development. We have benefited from his talents and know that your institution will as well.”

“Dr. Curley brings more than 20 years of experience in higher education and administrative leadership that significantly enhance our efforts to strengthen WKU’s advising structure and positively influence the university’s retention and student engagement efforts as well,” said Joelle Davis Carter, WKU’s Assistant Vice President for Retention and Student Services. “Russell will contribute significantly to the AARC with his years of experience across a broad range of services such as advising, registration, student orientation and student assessment. He also understands the importance of establishing quantitative standards to measure the effectiveness and quality of our programs. Russell believes if you can measure it, you can improve it.”

Dr. Curley served in a number of senior leadership positions prior to MSUM on the campuses of University of Cincinnati and North Iowa Area Community College. During his tenure at the University of Cincinnati, he served as the Director of the Transfer and Lifelong Learning Center and Office of Educational Services respectively.  As the Director of the TLLC, he was responsible for collaborating with 10 undergraduate colleges to seamlessly admit transfer undergraduate students and implement five transfer scholarship programs. Within these roles, he also was actively involved in securing a Trio McNair grant, establishing the initial McNair program, and developing First Year Experience and Learning Community programs.

Dr. Curley received his Doctor of Philosophy in higher education from the University of Iowa. He earned both his Master of Arts in Education in College Student Personnel and Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Philosophy from the University of Northern Iowa.
“I look forward to beginning as Director of the Academic Advising and Retention Center at WKU,” Dr. Curley said. “The mission of the AARC is to assist students in achieving their educational goals. It is my vision to make these activities even more effective and successful by framing them with various quantitative and analytical techniques including retention tracking models, continuous quality improvement, using the latest retention and advising software, and providing more and better faculty and staff development.”
