Financial Report, Administrative Retreat Among Topics Discussed at DCPS Board Luncheon

OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/24/13) -- The 2012-2013 annual financial report presented to the Daviess County Board of Education indicated that Daviess County Public Schools finished the 2012-2013 school year with $13.78 million, up $1.1 million from the previous year. The public schools were also up $246,000 in tax revenues.

Apollo High School topped the list of Daviess County schools with the largest amount of money left over when the school year was finished, with roughly $49,700.

The financial report was one of several topics discussed at a board of education luncheon on Tuesday.

“We should commend them for being financially judicious,” said board member Dianne Burns Mackey.

Teachers will return to school August 5 at 8 a.m. Awards will be given for “Excellence in Education” to elementary, middle, and high school teachers showing exemplary instructing in the classroom. An award will also be given for office employees who have also shown excellence in the school district.

An administrative retreat is planned for this Thursday and Friday at Owensboro Christian Church. Administrators can expect to learn methods to maintain student achievement, improve teacher quality, to meet the expectations of all students, and to maintain a high level of “customer” satisfaction, board members were told during the meeting Tuesday.

Owens Saylor, Superintendent, reported that MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) scores have improved in the 2012-2013 school year. MAP tests growth in reading and math within one year for students in grades kindergarten through eighth. Saylor said reading levels went from 58.9 percent to 65.1 percent reading on-grade level. Math scores went from 64.2 percent to 73 percent on-grade level.

In other business, the board discussed a new SEED fund that will be set up for the Daviess County High School Marching Band. The program is looking to purchase uniforms for their 140 members. The uniform costs add up to about $30,000 and will come out of an untouched portion of a district arts budget. The SEED fund will be used to match the money in the fund.

Policy Revision #09.2 (Student Welfare and Wellness) was discussed. This policy discourages food rewards. Any food, deserts or other, has to be for instructional use.

The Daviess County Board of Education will hold its regular meeting at its office on Thursday, July 25 at 6 p.m.
