Patriot Days Offers 'A Blast From The Past'

OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/14/13) - Nearly 1,000 students in the Daviess County School District gathered this afternoon to learn a history lesson outside of the traditional classroom.

Pioneer Village hosted the first day of its two-day fifth annual "Patriot Days" this afternoon where students of all ages toured exhibits to learn about colonial life in America.

Sean Dysinger with the Owensboro Daviess County Convention and Visitors Bureau told SurfKY News he thought it would be neat to have an event where they could put a copy of Constitution in the hands of local students.

Dozens of volunteers dressed up in full costume and sat outside of their cabins and establishments to reenact the ways of life for those during the Pioneer era. Today's guests featured President Abraham Lincoln, as well as a butter and candle maker, plus many more.

According to Dysinger, he enjoys spending time with each of the exhibitors the most.

"They all have interesting stories and they all love what they do," Dysinger said. "It's just a great group of folks to hang out with for a weekend."

Every student who participated on Friday walked away with their own copy of a "pocket constitution" and a first hand look at life during the late 18th century to early 19th century.

The event is open to the public on Saturday. There is a cost for admission.
