My Kentucky Roads: Grapevine Cemetery

cemetary1 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (10/5/13) – Grapevine Cemetery is located in the city of the Madisonville, Kentucky not too far off the Pennyrile Parkway. With Halloween just around the corner, a little spookiness is what you need.

There are different variations of the stories of the haunted cemetery. However, like most haunted cemeteries, most of the stories are very similar.

Known as the “Crying Angel,” legend has it, the angel statue with the broken wing and head is located at the very entrance of the Grapevine Cemetery and at midnight of a full moon you can see her crying blood for all the dead babies. The other story about the angel says is if you knock off her head unto the ground, that she will curse you with bad luck and if you are able to put her wing back on she will grant you a wish. It has been said that there is a red flower called “red moonflower” that only blooms at night that is right by her eyes and that’s why her eyes appear to be bleeding. Whereas, others truly believe that it is real blood.

Another story about the cemetery claims that a ghost of a young man will scream when he hears love songs because he killed himself after his girlfriend left him. Witnesses also claim that if you park in front of a certain grave, most likely the young man will make contact with you if you follow these steps: Open all your doors and trunk, roll down all your windows, and blare a love song from your car‘s radio, he will come and “greet” you by screaming a death roar. However, if you don’t get the trunk and doors closed with the windows rolled up before he gets to your car or you’ll die.

Whether these stories are true or not, there is only one way to really find out.
