Over $1 Million in Projects, Services Coming to Pennyrile Area

DOLLAR bill 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (10/9/13) – A total of $1.066 million for regional services and projects—including coal severance dollars to build a splash park in Hopkins County—was approved today by the state legislative Government Contract Review Committee.

Rep. Brent Yonts, D - Greenville, a current member and former chairman of the committee, said the committee approved $258,998 in coal severance funds for use by the Hopkins County Fiscal Court to cover costs associated with the water park. Costs include site infrastructure, permitting, a pump system, landscaping, and water features.

“The splash park will be a wonderful addition to Hopkins County and the Pennyrile region,” said Yonts. “And this funding will help move the project forward. Further, this is a huge economic tool to bring people to the City of Madisonville and Hopkins County from afar—an economic development tool at the local level.”

The committee also approved a $330,250 increase in coal severance funds to pay the bond debt on the Muhlenberg County courthouse renovations and construction of the county’s new 9-1-1 complex. The Muhlenberg County Fiscal Court is administering the funds.

“The renovations of the courthouse and construction of the emergency services complex has not cost taxpayers a dime,” Yonts said. “All costs have been paid with coal severance money.”

Other funding approved by the committee includes: $215,219 in state and federal funds administered by Pennyrile Area Development District for technical assistance in regional and local planning and development; $150,000 in coal severance funds administered by Madisonville Community College for establishment and furnishing of a synergy lab for the college; $100,000 in coal severance dollars to help the City of Mortons Gap in Hopkins County finish construction on its new municipal building; and $11,806 in federal funds to help Pennyrile RC&D provide urban and community forestry education on proper tree planting and care for the community, RC&D members, and municipal officials.

Rep. Brent Yonts represents the 15th House District which includes all of Muhlenberg County and portions of Christian and Hopkins counties.
