Hanson Veterans Center in 12th Year of Service

lisa wareHANSON, Ky. (10/23/13) – Admissions Coordinator of the Joseph “Eddie” Ballard Western Veterans Center, Lisa Ware, presented an overview of the center and its missing statement during a recent Madisonville Lion’s Club meeting.

The Joseph “Eddie” Ballard Western Veterans Center was opened March 14, 2002 in Hanson. Built on 33 acres of farmland five miles north of Madisonville, the facility provides long-term care for Kentucky Veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

“We are owned and operated by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. A lot of people have the misconception we are federal. We are a state facility,” said Ware. “That is one of the reasons why those who come into this facility must be a resident of the state of Kentucky.”

The veteran center provides and offers a wide range of services including the comforts, conveniences and the well-being of the veterans, she said.

Services include primary care physician, nurse practitioner, 24-hour nursing care, pharmacy services, physical therapy, a gift shop, a chaplain, arts and crafts, daily activities, a library and a wing designated for those with Alzheimer and dementia.

“We can take care of most nursing home needs, but there are some things we can’t,” said Ware. “We aren’t able to care for those with mental illnesses, behavioral problems, those who are a danger to themselves or to others, anyone who is an acute alcoholic or drug dependent nor those, who use ventilators.”

Ware said that admissions is a necessary process.

Those who are interested in residency must meet with an admissions coordinator, fill out an application package and return with the list of documentations they need. Once everything is turned in, an applicant's package goes to an admissions committee to be reviewed.

“Our mission is to provide top notch nursing-care for our veterans,” said Ware. “I have worked at the veterans center since it opened and I can actually say that we feel like it is a commitment rather than a job and that we are very fortune to serve our veterans.”

Ware also spoke about other services including providing cemeteries, counseling and programs for homeless veterans and women veterans.
