MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/4/13) – In 2006, a nurse named Nancy Ruth Friis-Jensen from Denmark attended a worldwide Congress of Operating Room Nurses in Washington D.C. and in connection to this, a surgeon from the Frederiksberg Hospital in Denmark asked her to investigate new products and services that were available to mastectomy patients for his wife’s breast surgery clinic.

The Heart Pillow Project was discovered in the United States at the Erlanger Breast Resource Center and brought back to Denmark by Nancy Friss-Jensen.This project was started to help ease the pain of the breast cancer patients. The pillow was specifically made to be placed under the arm to relieve the pain from the surgical incision and the tension and the swelling caused by surgical procedure.

“We made a 100 heart pillows and we are donating these pillows in hopes they can ease some of the pain for the women who have this procedure done,” said Melinda Howell-Oglesby, owner of Curves.

The pillows that were made by members of Curves, were delivered to the Mahr Cancer Center in hopes that they will bring comfort to those who are recovery from their surgery.
