MURRAY, Ky. (3/14/14) — Two of Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s medical clinics are starting Diabetes education classes for those with diabetes and their family members.
Murray Medical Associates, located on the fourth floor of the Medical Arts Building West Wing at 803 Poplar Street in Murray, is hosting classes this month Wednesday, March 19 at 8:30 a.m. and Thursday, March 20 at 3 p.m.
Marshall County Family Medical, located at 543 Powell Lane in Benton, is hosting a class Thursday, March 27 at 3:30 p.m.
“These classes focus on the basics of meal planning, diabetes self-care, and getting or staying active. If patients need further instruction for specific medications, we can facilitate that too,” said Kathy Farley, Clinic Manager.
Classes run approximately one to one and a half hours, depending on the needs of the attendees.
The content will be tailored to those in the class, creating a custom experience that aims to answer any questions attendees may have and provide as much information as possible.
There is no charge for the class, and all are welcome to attend one or multiple sessions. Family members are also encouraged to attend, as the diabetes management process often involves them as well.
Diabetes is a serious disease that strikes nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States. A quarter of those with diabetes (7 million) do not even know they have it. An additional 79 million, or one in three American adults, have pre-diabetes, which puts them at high risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless more preventative steps are taken.
Interested parties are asked to pre-register for the class. For more information or to pre-register, contact Farley at (270) 762-1782.
