Auditions for “Sweeney Todd – the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” will be held May 17 and 18 at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts on the campus of Madisonville Community College in Madisonville, Kentucky.

The rare instance of a musical thriller, “Sweeney Todd” is Stephen Sondheim's chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous "barberism" and culinary crime. Told through song, this is the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th Century London seeking revenge. The sophisticated and breath-taking music of Sondheim mixes with visceral drama and deliciously funny moments of dark humor. This production will be recommended for audiences, ages 14 and up due to violence and mature themes.

“Sweeney Todd” will require a cast of approximately 30 experienced vocalists ranging in age from 18 to 60s. There is also a role for a pre-teen boy that could be portrayed by a boy or girl. Auditions will be held on stage 2 p.m. May 17 at the Glema Center on Saturday, and 2 p.m Sunday, May 18.

Those auditioning should have a prepared song, either by Sondheim or similar in style, that is not from "Sweeney Todd."

No prepared monologue is needed. Please dress comfortably. Those interested in auditioning who have a conflict with audition dates should contact the Glema Center.

This production will be directed by Sarah Schneider, who has served as Summer Arts Academy Director for the last two years.

Performances dates are July 18-20, 2014 at the Glema Center with regularly scheduled rehearsals beginning May 22. Rehearsals will be Monday through Thursday, adding weekend rehearsals closer to production dates.

Also, there will be openings for technical volunteers.  Those interested in either performing or backstage/technical work are encouraged to attend auditions.
