Local Students Compete for Chance at International Chemistry Olympiad

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ky. (4/17/13) – Eight students from four high schools in Tennessee and Kentucky took a three-part national examination at U.T.-Martin on Saturday, April 13 to see if they could qualify for the 45th International Chemistry Olympiad in Moscow.

The nominees were chosen for the Kentucky Lake Section of the American Chemical Society. Dr. S. K. Airee coordinated the event with fours student members of ACS (SMACS) William Crosby, Meagan Eason , Ian Garrigan and Krysten Harris helping with the preparation of the laboratory component, proctoring, and hospitality. Twenty students from out of 1200 nationwide, who took the test, will undergo extensive training June 04-19 at the U. S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Then, the top four students will be choosen to represent the US at the Moscow IChO competition.
 
The four participated schools along with teachers are: Calloway County High School (CCHS), Murray, KY, teacher Erica Gray; Marshall County High School (MCHS), Benton, KY, teacher Lisa Devillez; University School of Jackson (USJ), Jackson, TN teacher Malea Mullins; and Westview High School (WHS), Martin, TN teacher Jessica Hightower.
