sex offender wellsDAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. (5/14/14) ―  The Dawson Springs Police Department has charged a convicted sex offender with non-compliance with the Kentucky Sex Offender Registry for living within a few feet of the Dawson Springs School System.

According to a press release from Dawson Springs Police, Robert Joseph Wells, 37, a convicted sex offender from Michigan, had been residing at 208 Parker Street since his release on a personal recognizance bond May 5 from the Hopkins County Jail. Wells had been indicted by the Hopkins County Grand Jury April 29 for failure to comply with the sex offender registry and being a persistent felony offender.

Further investigation revealed that Wells, who is a lifetime registrant, had listed an address outside the city limits through the Department of Probation and Parole. However, he was not residing at that residence but within proximity of the school system, the report said.

Capt. Craig Patterson and Officer Brad Ross went to the 208 Parker Street address to follow up on a harassment complaint. When Patterson and Ross made contact with Wells, he fled from the scene. A foot chase ensued and after an altercation, a Taser was deployed to subdue Wells.

He was charged with failure to comply with the sex offender registry, fleeing or evading police, first degree, on foot; third-degree assault/police officer; resisting arrest; and, alcohol intoxication.

He is being lodged in the Hopkins County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.
