Calloway Middle Students Compete at National History Bee

CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. (6/23/14) — Two students from Calloway County Middle School, Kati Wyant and Will Benson, recently competed in Atlanta at the National History Bee, an academic competition for elementary and middle school students that tests knowledge of a wide range of historical topics.

The National tournament was hosted at the Hilton in Atlanta, Ga., and consisted of competitors from 47 states. Kati and Will competed in five rounds of quick recall type questions against other regional qualifiers for the chance at a $5,000 scholarship.

Both Will and Kati performed well as they gathered points from each round. At the conclusion of the preliminary rounds, both students from Calloway narrowly missed qualifying for the championship rounds.

Kati and Will were two of just a few students that represented Kentucky at the National Tournament. The journey started in January as they scored high enough on the Online Regional Qualifying Exam. At that point, they were both invited to the Regional Tournament held in Nashville, Tenn. Once again, they scored high enough against students from several states to place them in the national competition.

The Calloway History Team is coached by Scott Pile and Mitch Hultman.
