Greenville Resident Named as 'Key to the City' Award Recipient

key cityGREENVILLE, Ky. (4/17/13) – The city of Greenville and the Greenville Tourism Commission were pleased to present a special “Key to the City” award and mayoral proclamation to Greenville resident Walt Meriwether at the regularly scheduled Greenville Tourism Commission meeting on Monday, April 15th, 2013.

Mr. Meriwether received these special honors for his efforts in Budget Travel’s nationwide contest “Americas Coolest Small Town.” Mr. Meriwether was the person responsible for Greenville’s nomination. The nomination was made in August of 2012 and with the support of his friends and the Greenville High School Alumni group, The Girls of GHS, he landed Greenville in to the top 15 out of 924 towns in the entire United States in that first round of voting. He then brought it to the attention of the city and tourism commission and the rest as they say is history. In the final round of voting Greenville went from 13th all the way to 3rd runner-up and was the only town in the state of Kentucky to make the finals. “As I have said before, Greenville’s greatest asset is our people. Greenville’s renaissance in the last five years would not have been possible without the dedication and support of our residents. Their hard work and passion for our community not only makes Greenville a great place to live, but a great place to visit” said GTC Director Beth Newman.

In addition to the “Key to the City” Award, Mr. Meriwether was presented with a special mayoral proclamation from Greenville Mayor, Ed DeArmond. This proclamation declared April 15th, 2013 as “Walt Meriwether Day” in the city of Greenville. This date will forever be remembered as a day to honor Mr. Meriwether and his passion for his hometown, a passion that gave Greenville, KY a coveted spot in the national stage.
