Graduation Speaker Selected as WKCTC April Student of the Month

roh henley 300PADUCAH, Ky. (5/10/13) – Just before veteran and honor student Roy Henley is to speak at the West Kentucky Community and Technical College graduation ceremonies on May 14, he found out he has been selected as the college’s Student of the Month for April.
 
“What a month! Being selected to speak at graduation, studying hard and having success in my final exams, and now, being selected as the Student of the Month; it is all so unbelievable!” said Henley. “What a great way to end my time as a student at WKCTC.”
 
Henley, a Graves County resident, is a non-traditional student who worked at the Goodyear Tire Plant for 13 years prior to its closing. Henley said the bump in the road of losing a good job was the turning point to allow him to pursue his lifelong dream of being a teacher.
 
“I feel so blessed to have started my college endeavor here at West Kentucky. Having never experienced college life, and then beginning that life at 41 years old, I was full of anxiety,” he said. “But teaching has always been a dream of mine and I feel very blessed to be able to pursue that dream now in my 40s at WKCTC.”
 
Henley is a leader on campus, as well as a member of the All-KCTCS (Kentucky Community and Technical College System) Academic Team, and will be a student speaker at this year's graduation. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, TRIO Student Support Services, and the New Beginnings Adult Support Group. Henley also serves in the community as a Cub Scout leader, church youth leader, football coach, a member of two Mayfield city boards, and thespian performer at the Mayfield's Purchase Players.
 
Henley credits his family and the WKCTC faculty and staff with helping him succeed. “’Thank You to all my professors, fellow students, faculty, staff, and friends, as well as my best friend, my wife, Lara, who is successfully finishing her second semester in the nursing program,” Henley said. “To anyone who thinks the hurdle is just too tall, take it from me, you can find it within yourself, along with the love, friendship, and help of the great people here at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, to get the job done.”
 
On May 14, Henley will receive his Associate in Arts degree with high distinction from WKCTC. He plans to transfer to Murray State University, where he will major in history and earn his teaching certification in secondary education.
 
“I feel sure Roy will face the next challenges in his journey with the same strong work ethic, positive attitude and friendly manner that he has had here at WKCTC,” said Belinda Dalton-Russell, WKCTC vice president of student affairs. “If you are looking for a WKCTC student who goes above and beyond and exemplifies exceptional performance, Roy Henley is your best choice!
