LEXINGTON, KY (2/14/13) – Chris McCarron, hall of fame jockey and executive director of the North American Racing Academy, has been named the grand marshal of the 34th Annual Alltech Lexington St. Patrick’s Parade to be held on Saturday, March 16, in downtown Lexington.
In naming him, the Bluegrass Irish Society board said, “Chris is a world-class athlete and a world-class person. He typifies all that is good about our Irish culture. Among his many achievements is the Mike Venezia Memorial Award for ‘extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship’.”
Although retired from racing, Chris remains a significant contributor to the thoroughbred industry. His contributions are legend. In addition to winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness on Alysheba, McCarron has four other Triple Crown victories, nine Breeders’ Cup victories and has won virtually every major race in North America. After 28 years in racing, he retired as the all-time leader in purse earnings with more than $264 million in winnings.
Among his other accomplishments, McCarron served as technical advisor, racing designer and actor in the film Seabiscuit; co-founded the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund which assists disabled jockeys and their families; Eclipse awards and was inducted into the National Racing Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
The central Kentucky community is invited to join the Bluegrass Irish Sociey in honoring Chris for his many contributions at the Alltech St. Patrick’s Day on March 16 at 1 p.m.
