FCPS Tightens Criteria for Out of Area School Requests

Fayette Public Schools 02 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (3/7/13) – In limited circumstances, students in Fayette County Public Schools may ask to attend a school other than the main one serving their neighborhood. The allowable reasons are listed in the online application, and district-level approval is not guaranteed.

Because of capacity concerns, elementary students are encouraged to attend their assigned school. Starting with the 2013-2014 applications, the criteria for requesting a change are limited. Priorities include children of school-level employees, walkers living within one mile, fifth-graders wanting to finish at their same school, siblings, and students anticipating a family move before Oct. 31.

Middle and high school students will only be approved to attend other schools that have space available. In most cases, this means the school must be at less than 90 percent of its enrollment capacity.

• Application – 2013-2014 will be available at 8 a.m. April 9

An out-of-area agreement will be attached to each approval letter; it must be signed and returned to the school. While in most cases placements will be continued year to year, an annual review of student attendance, behavior and academic progress might lead to revocation. Also, note that all students approved for out-of-area placements must provide their own transportation.

Visit www.fcps.net/outofarea for more details; for questions, call Jean Salley in the Department of Pupil Personnel at (859) 381-4122. FCPS administrators appreciate elementary families’ patience and understanding during this time while many schools are at or above capacity.
