OWENSBORO, Ky. (6/28/13) – The search for the next president/CEO of the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation has moved from the application phase to the screening phase of the 62 applicants for the position as of yesterday.
Scott McCain, chair of the search committee, said the board received applications from far and wide, including a couple of international applicants. However, three of the applicants were from Owensboro and about four were from other parts of Kentucky. The rest were from all parts of the United States.
Approximately 18 of the total applicant pool have economic development experience. The board created a five‐member Search Committee in May. EDC Board Chairman Fred May named EDC Vice‐Chairman McCain as the head of the Search Committee in May. The position was advertised locally, statewide, and nationally through the International Economic Development Council from mid‐May until the end of June.
Criteria for the position included a Bachelor's Degree; with an advanced degree preferred. Two years of progressively responsible experience in economic development, or related field with demonstrated management experience as a minimum requirement. The board is looking for an individual with experience implementing a comprehensive economic development strategy involving new business attraction, existing business retention, high tech and startup incubation, quality of place, and workforce development.
The Search Committee, with the help of a third party consultant, will screen applicants, conduct interviews, and make recommendations to the EDC Executive Board and full board for final approval by early fall. The full board will have the opportunity to meet in person, hear presentations and ask questions in a forum style setting of the final list of several recommended candidates. Current EDC President/CEO Nick Brake will become the Superintendent of the Owensboro Public Schools in July.
In the interim period, Madison Silvert, the current Executive Vice President of the EDC, will step in as acting CEO until a new President is named.
