Consumer Chronicles: Fitness Centers

treadmills 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (8/13/13) – Before we know it, temperatures will be falling and colder weather will begin to set in. The end of summer can be a “chill”ing thought for many, especially those who enjoy exercising outdoors. Yet, a number of fitness centers across the Lexington area will allow you to continue an exercise regime without having to battle the soon-to-be frigid temperatures.

Lexington Athletic Club: The Large, Full-Service Option
One of those centers is the Lexington Athletic Club, located at 3882 Mall Road. The LAC offers a variety of equipment and classes to keep you in shape. Classes offered include spinning, cross-fit and Zumba. These classes are free with a membership.

Their facility consists of separate areas for a number of different types of athletic training, including a swimming pool, cross-fit area, racquetball courts and a running track circling the equipment from overhead. The LAC also has a workout room with equipment that's reserved specifically for women.

The LAC also has activities for children. Kids Place, located adjacent to the LAC has games and a playroom for kids to enjoy. In addition, the facility has a cafe to compliment your healthy eating style.

Rates at the LAC vary on the length and type of membership you would like to have. The Gold package gives you unlimited access to the LAC during business hours, which are Monday through Thursday 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Silver members can’t access the gym between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

With a 36-month agreement, the cost for a Gold membership is $39.99 per month and a Silver membership costs $29.99 per month. New members receive three months free. A 12-month membership costs $49.99 per month for a Gold package and $39.99 per month for a Silver package, in addition to a $19 enrollment fee. You'll also receive one month free. Shorter-term memberships are also available.

Planet Fitness: For the Fitness Fanatic on a Budget
Planet Fitness, located at 1650 Bryan Station Road, also has all the equipment you'll need to stay in shape through the winter months. The center, along with rows of treadmills, bicycles, etc., has a weight lifting area and tanning beds. Planet Fitness also offers a variety of classes for fitness training including arms, legs and abs workouts. Tired after a long workout? Check out the relaxation area, which includes a number of hydrotherapy beds and massage chairs.

Need some guidance? Not a problem at Planet Fitness. With your membership, you can schedule an appointment with a personal trainer at no additional cost. Along with a $29 yearly enrollment fee, a no-commitment membership costs $10 a month. Or, for a Planet Fitness black card, which includes free use of the hydrotherapy beds, massage chairs, and unlimited tanning among other amenities, you'll pay $19.99 with a $10 enrollment fee. The black card is a 12-month membership. But, regardless of which membership you choose, they both will allow you 24/7 access to the facility.

Central Baptist HealthwoRx: Train and Rehabilitate with the Professionals
Central Baptist HealthwoRx, located at 161 Lexington Green Cir, is also designed to help people of all ages achieve their fitness goals. Just like the previous two centers, HealthwoRx has all the strength and cardio equipment you'll need.

A professionally trained staff of exercise physiologists, certified fitness practitioners and registered dieticians are offered throughout the day to get you started on an exercise plan, or to help with rehabilitation if you're injured.

Classes offered include kickboxing, yoga, Zumba and many others. These classes are free with a membership or can be purchased separately via “class cards.” Class cards range from 5 classes for $35 to 12 classes for $60.

HealthwoRx offers a membership for adults ages 18 and over for $30 a month and a $30 enrollment fee. The enrollment fee is waived with a three or six month commitment. With a 12-month membership, you'll pay $330 for the year and no enrollment fee. Family memberships are also available for $60 a month and a $60 enrollment fee. With a three and six month family membership commitment, there's no enrollment fee. With a 12-month family membership, there's also no enrollment fee and you'll pay $660 for the year. Senior citizens may qualify for a free membership under the Silver Sneakers' program, if offered through the individual's insurance policy. If not, the rates are discounted for senior citizens under the Golden Stars program.

HealthwoRx is open Monday through Thursday 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

With these options, you're guaranteed to find a workout experience that will fulfill your needs, and especially your budget, no matter the season.
