The Dailey Dose: Getting in Touch with My Inner Pin Up Girl

pinup2LEXINGTON, Ky (8/21/13)—During World War II posters of women hung on many soldiers’ walls and today the women are now looked at as historical celebrities. Betty Page, Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe graced the walls of many young men in the past, and are now idolized by both men and women for their natural beauty and curves.

On Saturday August 24, I will be following in these women’s high-heeled footsteps when I take the stage in Cynthiana, Ky. to participate in my first Miss Cynthiana Rod Run Pageant. This isn’t like any normal pageant however, because the required attire is ‘pin up.’ I saw it advertised about three weeks ago, and as someone who is always up for a challenge, I decided to sign up.

Once I had made up my mind to try and make the roll as an American pin up girl, I started searching for what I was going to wear. Looking at the famous pin up girls in the 50s and going with that I finally found a swimsuit and a party dress to showcase on Saturday.

I am one who lacks self-confidence, but I started to think about the women who were pinned on the walls so many years ago. Their figures weren’t all the same and they carried themselves with confidence and poise. The past three weeks I have been preparing myself to take the stage in front of hundreds of people to not only represent the Cynthiana Rod Run Car Show, but myself as well.

A quote by Betty Page has helped me become more than ready as the days get closer to my pin up debut: “I didn’t think of myself as liberated, and I don’t believe that I did anything important. I was just myself. I didn’t know any other way to be, or any other way to live.”

On Saturday I’m going to get up on stage and be myself, because for the past 23 years it’s worked pretty well for me. If I walk away with a crown on my head, great, if I don’t then at least I can look back when I get older and say that I did something out of my comfort zone. That is when you really grow as a person, when you do something that nobody could ever picture you doing.

The Miss Cynthiana Rod Run Pageant will be held at Rohs Opera House in Cynthiana at 5 p.m.
