Ken’s New Market Celebrates Anniversary with Sand Castles

LEXINGTON, Ky. (9/3/13)—Family owned business Ken’s New Market is celebrating their 34th anniversary. Located in Paris, Cynthiana and Flemingsburg, the grocery store has been selling fresh produce, quality meats and many specialty bakery items to their customers since 1979.

To celebrate and let their customers know about the 34th anniversary, Ken’s has put sand sculptures on display in their Cynthiana and Paris locations. These aren’t just ordinary sand sculptures though. The Techau family called in ‘The Sand Sculpture Company’, which is located in Chicago, Illinois to build the incredible sand display. The sand sculpture in Cynthiana is of the ‘SpongeBob’ characters, and the sculpture at the Paris location is of the characters from ‘The Little Mermaid.’

“It was crazy to watch it unfold,” said Joel Techau CEO of Ken’s New Market. “It started as a pile of 18-tons of sand and turned into art.”

Ted Siebert began sculpting the sand on a Tuesday in August and finished three days later on a Friday night.

“I had seen the sand sculptures In Arizona before and wanted to do something special for the anniversary,” said Techau. “Seeing the reaction of our customers has been great. They have taken pictures with the sculptures and have said great things, it’s been really neat.”

Due to Thanksgiving and Christmas being just around the corner the sand sculptures will have to come down in the middle of September.

“I encourage everyone to come out and check the sand sculptures out,” said Techau.

The Sand Sculpture Company has made sculptures from 10 to 5000 tons of sand all over the world. The art of sand sculpting is a great way to see artists in action and as Ken’s has found out, intriguing to all ages.

“We are already planning what characters to pick for next year’s anniversary,” said Techau.
