LEXINGTON, Ky. (12/2/13) – Eighth-grader Alex Lopez of Beaumont Middle School earned first-place honors with her piece “Untitled” in the 2013 Improbable Baubles design contest at the Headley-Whitney Museum. Also, fourth-grader Brayan Ramirez of Cardinal Valley Elementary received a Judge’s Choice award for his faux bibelot “Cobra Strikes Again.”
Bibelots are small objects of curiosity, beauty or rarity. The late George Headley III, a jewelry designer, crafted bibelots using precious and semi-precious stones and metals. Today’s art students work in more ordinary media like rhinestones and spray paint to create faux bibelots.
Nearly 900 students participated in the sixth annual competition, with middle and elementary school entries coming from Fayette, Franklin and Woodford counties. Improbable Baubles originally was an art contest for Fayette County eighth-graders. All local middle schoolers were invited starting in 2010.
This year, the 92 pieces chosen for display can be seen at the museum on Old Frankfort Pike through Dec. 22. The awards were announced at the Nov. 23 opening reception. For more information, call (859) 255-6653.
