Local Film Makers, Film Fans to Merge During 'Unscripted'

unscripted 300x450OWENSBORO, Ky. (1/2/14) — Film fanatics often fantasize about one day catching a flight to L.A. to have brunch with Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino or Steven Spielberg while picking their brains about their most dramatic cinematic selections.

Owensboro residents, however, do not have to travel thousands of miles to discuss their favorite independent movies with its directors. The Daviess County Public Library will be hosting the third “Unscripted Film Series” beginning in January, giving local filmmakers a viable location to screen their work.

The series, brought to the library by independent filmmaker, P.J. Starks, offers viewers an opportunity to screen the movie, interact with the director in a question and answer session, and to be present during a live director’s commentary of the movie. It was designed after Starks’ love for movie special features like Director’s Commentary.

“It takes (the director) back to situation when (he or she) was filming the movie and it becomes this whole other experience,” said Starks. “It’s become the most popular part of ‘Unscripted' . . . it’s what people keep coming back to.”

As many as 250 people have come out to the previous six-week film screenings, making it one of DCPL’s biggest events.

“I’m just really glad it’s become so popular with the Owensboro crowd . . . it gives people the opportunity and do something different,” said Starks.

Series Three of Unscripted is distinctive from the previous screenings, said Starks. “Unscripted” held a script writing contest in November and narrowed submissions down to two scripts produced by local writers. The scripts, one an espionage piece and one a supernatural horror, will be turned into films — acted and directed by Owensboro locals — and will be screened in February at DCPL.

The event is completely a “grassroots” project, Starks tells SurfKY.

“Unscripted” is free and open to the public and viewers also have the opportunity to hear local bands provided by Bad Apple Records. Free popcorn and drinks will also be provided by Malco Theater.

The ‘Unscripted Film Series’ will begin Saturday, Jan. 11 and will run every weekend through February at the Daviess County Public Library. To check out some clips from Series 2, go to: http://www.youtube.com/veritecinemafilms.
