Daviess County School Board Hears Reports, Approves Calendar

dcps3 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (4/18/14) – A state requirement for school districts to incorporate a number of make-up days into its calendar based on the highest number of missed days due to inclement weather means the 2014 - 15 school year calendar will include days in June.

The calendar was presented for approval at the Daviess County Board of Education meeting Thursday night. District administrators told the board make-up day requirements meant adding eight days in June 2015. The calendar can be viewed here.

In other business, district administrators presented results of recent state testing for eighth grade and high school juniors. In both tests, Daviess County Public Schools students performed better as a group than the average state-wide score, but are still behind where officials said they want the district to be in terms of overall percentages.

Each test scores students in three categories – English, Reading, and Math. On the Explore test, students at Daviess County earned an average of 77.7 percent, 57.6 percent, and 48.2 percent, respectively. That compared to the state averages of 65.1 percent, 44.4 percent, and 34.7 percent.

On the PLAN test, students attending Daviess County last year scored overall averages of 78.0 percent in English, 57.6 percent in reading, and 30.8 percent in math. State-wide, the average PLAN score for English was 66.7 percent, 48.2 percent in reading, and 25.6 percent in math.

The board also congratulated several students on recent achievements, including recognition of future problem solving team members.
