Baptist Health Paducah 300PADUCAH, Ky. (4/6 /13) – People who go into cardiac arrest while they are in the hospital get prompt and appropriate treatment – a fact long practiced at Baptist Health Paducah, but one now recognized by a national award.

Baptist Health received the Get With The Guidelines®–Resuscitation Silver Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association for reaching an aggressive goal in using guidelines-based care to improve patient outcomes from in-hospital cardiac arrest. The hospital received the Bronze Quality Award three months ago.

The silver award recognizes achieving a year or more of 85 percent or higher adherence based on four criteria to improve quality of care and outcome.

Team leader Elisha Richardson, R.N., clinical care coordinator on the cardiac floor, said the hospital has long had practices in place to save lives, ensuring cardiac arrest patients get timely CPR, defibrillation or other appropriate treatment within minutes.

“We’ve been doing this for years and by doing so well, we were able to get the Silver Award,” Richardson said. “It is early recognition and response by the staff that helped get us to this point.”

More than 18,800 in-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year, according to the American Heart Association. The Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation program aims to help hospital teams save more lives threatened by cardiopulmonary emergencies by consistently following the most up-to-date scientific guidelines for treating patients who suffer a cardiac arrest in the hospital.
