'Team Blondie' Walks for a Cure

blondie 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/6/13)- Back in 1982, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister that she would do everything she could to find a cure for breast cancer, that’s when the Susan G. Komen for the Cure was created and launched a global breast cancer movement. Since the early 80s, Komen has played a huge role in every major advance in the fight of breast cancer.

“Back in 2009, my mom was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and last year I saw an advertisement for the Susan G. Komen 3 day, which you walk 60 miles in three days to raise money for breast cancer research. I teamed up with a friend to do the walk. The name Team Blondie came from my dad’s dad who nicknamed my mom Blondie because she use to have really long blonde hair that came down to her butt. So in order to honor my mom, we named the team, Team Blondie,” stated Jeff Todd, founder of Team Blondie. This year, will be Team Blondie’s second cancer walk. They will be walking in Chicago August 9th-11th 2013. Todd expressed, “When my mom was doing her chemo, and if the chemo worked, they gave her only 12-15 months to live and it has been three years now. As her son and as a guy, we want to fix things and this we can’t. So I wanted to figure out a way where I could do something to help. Then I saw the 60 mile walk and it was such a challenge, and when you get there, you hear everyone’s stories that before you know it, you are 12 miles into the day and saw this walk as a way to help and make a difference.”

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, is the world’s largest fundraising event for breast cancer, these races raise a significant amount of funds and awareness for a cure for breast cancer.

“Mom is really taking hold of the team and the whole community has really bonded together and said they wanted to be a part in it, especially now we are getting ready for the second year. Everyone has been asking how they can help,” Todd stated. “What we would like to do and would be awesome for Team Blondie, is to spread out to more than just breast cancer. Where Team Blondie can do more, like Team Blondie for Relay for Life and kind of make that into an entity in itself,” continued Todd.

Over the next few months, the team will be having a lot of fundraisers. “On May 18th, we will be having a corn hole tournament at Royal Brass and Hose, located on Anton Road. We are in the process of finalizing all the details. The radio station 92.5 will be out to do their broadcast that day and we will have food, music, and door prizes. A few of my friends are going to donate some custom made corn hole boards for the winning team. We are still in the process of trying to possibly do a one day walk here in July, where everyone can come out,” stated Todd.

“We are just wanting to reach out to the community, that everyone somewhere is affected by this and knows someone who knows someone who has had cancer or lost someone from it or battling it themselves. It effects everybody,” expressed Todd.
