Powderly Turn Lane Work Awarded Last Friday

kentucky trans yellow 300POWDERLY, Ky. (4/30/13) – A bid for construction of turn lanes along Ky. 189 in Powderly was let on April 26 by the state Transportation Cabinet in Frankfort.

The bid was officially awarded to Road Builders LLC, which bid $396,984.86 on the project. It covers work on turn lanes at mile points 12.16 northbound, 12.27 southbound, 12.46 north and southbound, and 12.64 northbound in Powderly, according to construction procurement information posted on the Cabinet’s web page.

State Rep. Brent Yonts of Greenville, who represents Powderly in the Kentucky House, said the bid includes turn lanes at Ky. 189/U.S. 62 that will accommodate traffic created by the Pogue Automotive autoplex at Ky. 189 and Copper Creek Drive.

“The turn lanes will accommodate traffic to and from the multi-million-dollar autoplex on Ky. 189,” Yonts said today. “This satisfies a budget appropriation for that road work that I was able to secure during the 2012 budget session.”

Yonts said the additional turn lanes, located between the Pogue dealership's entrance at Copper Creek Drive and the intersection with Old Cleaton Road, will accommodate “heavy traffic that is already on the highway, as well as future traffic.” Yonts has requested that the Cabinet place a stop light at the Pogue entrance for improved safety.

“It has been recommended that the traffic light be installed at the intersection of Copper Creek Drive and Ky. 189/U.S. 62 where it intersects with the entrance to be built into the autoplex,” said Yonts. “The traffic counts are on the cusp of meeting the recommendation for a new traffic light.”

The Cabinet also accepted bids in April for emergency repair and installation of navigational lights on the Western Kentucky Parkway Bridge over Green River coupled with emergency work to navigational lights on the Rockport U.S. 62 Bridge in Ohio County. The unofficial low bid for the project was $245,200 from Davis H. Elliot Co., Inc. for work on both the parkway and the Rockport Bridge.

Other bids accepted by the Cabinet in April include:

• Bids for blacktopping of approximately 3 miles of Ky. 1031 from U.S. 62 north to U.S. 431 in Muhlenberg County (lowest bid: $665,433.65 from Road Builders LLC );
• Bids for installation of approximately 0.20 miles of guardrail from 0.343 miles north of Duvall Lane to Terrebone Loop (lowest bid: $26,949.90 from Eden Fence Inc.);
• Bids for construction of a left turn lane on the U.S. 68 Bypass in Christian County from the bypass into the Eagle Cove subdivision at mile point 5.93 in Hopkinsville (lowest bid: $75,345.85 from Westate Construction Inc.);
• Bids for blacktopping of approximately 1.42 miles of the Jefferson Davis Highway from U.S. 68 east to the Todd County line in Christian County (lowest bid: $109,481.89 from Rogers Group Inc.).

The Cabinet has awarded a bid for blacktopping on Arcadia Avenue and West Noel Avenue in Hopkins County to Road Builders LLC. The company bid $405,222.27 on the project in March; the project was awarded by the Cabinet on April 3.
