accident glass 300PADUCAH, Ky. (7/1/13) – On June 29, at approximately 9:47 PM, McCracken County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to an accident with possible injuries at the 10.5 mm on I-24 in the westbound lanes.
 
Upon arrival, it was determined that three vehicles were involved in the collision. Richard Griffen of Dunwoody, GA was operating a 2008 Dodge Caliber. Mr. Griffen advised that he failed to realize that the traffic cones in the work zone were directing him into the slow lane from the fast lane and he stated that he drove into the construction area. Mr. Griffen stated that upon realizing that he had done this he braked and drove back into the slow lane in front of a 2000 Toyota Avalon driven of Deana Jackson of Mayfield, KY.
 
Ms. Jackson stated that she observed the vehicle in front of her drive into construction area, then drive back in front of her. Ms. Jackson stated that she braked and swerved onto the shoulder in an attempt to avoid striking Mr. Griffen Ms. Jackson was unable to avoid striking Griffen’s vehicle. Upon striking Mr. Griffen, Jackson was also struck in the rear by a 2013 Ford Focus driven by Deborah Jones of Paducah, KY.
 
Jones advised that she observed brake lights in front of her and that she attempted to stop as well. Jones stated that she braked and swerved onto the shoulder as well, in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, she was unable to and she struck Jackson in the rear.
 
Ms. Jones and Ms. Jackson were transported by Mercy Regional EMS to local hospitals for treatment on non-life threatening injuries.
 
Traffic was disrupted for approximately 45 minutes for investigation, cleanup of the scene and realignment of the traffic cones in the transition zone from the fast lane to the slow lane.
 
Motorists are urged to use extra caution while traveling through the construction zone on I-24.
 
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department was assisted on scene by Mercy Regional EMS, Reidland-Farley Fire Department, Randy’s Towing, Jim Smith Contracting.
