Meet and Greet with Local Author Tabitha Short

tabitha 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/2/13) – Self-published author, Tabitha Short will be doing a meet and greet this Friday, July 5th at Van’s Book & Music Exchange in Greenville from 5:00pm-7:00pm and Monday, July 8th at the Hopkins County – Madisonville Public Library at 6:00pm.

“I’ve been writing for so long… I’ve always been a storyteller… I’ve done it since I was a kid,” said Short. “I think I mostly discovered it when we moved out into the country and there were no kids to play with but me and my younger brother. I had a lot of time to sit and write. What also started it was probably around 5th grade when I started winning awards for writing. So I thought I must be good at this.”

After Tabitha graduated from high school, she went on to Western Kentucky University with a scholarship in journalism. For her first two years, she studied journalism and then switched over to advertising. She then moved to Newport Vermont, close to the Canadian border, where she resides with her husband.

“First Five Pages Publications is a business I own. It’s a Vermont business… so it’s an entity. I do also publish other people. But we mostly do e-publishing and print books through Amazon. But we are expanding,” Short stated. “When you use this system, you can’t get into mainstream like Barnes & Noble or Books-a-Million. So we are expanding and taking all the extra things so we can start putting those books in Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million.”

“Her Sister’s Murderer,” a young adult mystery and the first of the series, is about a girl who visits a psychic with a friend who tells her things about a sister she had that was kidnapped before she was born. Coincidently, her love interest is going to the town that her sister was taken from. She tags along because she wants to find out any information about her sister’s disappearance. Since there was no evidence or witnesses to the kidnapping, the case went cold. While she is there, she does find out the whole story about what happened to her sister. However, in doing so, she encounters a lot of danger.

“What inspired ‘Her Sister’s Murderer,’ is every year in November there is a 30-day 50,000 word challenge,” said Short. “You can win prizes and things like that, but on the general, the online community of writers and authors, we use it as an opportunity to lift and support each other. So we use this writing community to encourage each other, to push each other to do more writing and ‘Her Sister’s Murderer’ was a spawn of that. I wrote it in 30 days… finished it on day 30, but I made it. And as for the story line goes… I was doing research for another story I had and looking a lot into physics and paranormal element and the story just kind of fell into my head… and honestly, I started writing it not sure where it was going… but with the 30-day mark… I had to keep going. But I did it and it turned out to be a great story.”

“Arena Games Legend of Petrova” is also a young adult story and first of a series about a young girl who’s whole life was built around competing in arena games. In these arenas, instead of using every day weaponry, they used orbs. These orbs explode and can do many different magical and mythical things. The young girl is legendary in the games. However, one day something tragic happens and she is no longer allowed to compete in the arena games anymore. She then decides to become a master trainer and takes in a little girl who is full of secrets and mystery. She takes a journey into a gypsy magical forest where she learns to find her footing in her new title.

“The Arena Games took me two years to write,” Short said. “What instigated this story is that I found a fantasy image of a girl... kind of like a cartoonist picture. She had long dark red hair with a patch over eye and a samurai sword and wearing a kimono with Japanese scenery setting on the back… and that was what I based my character off of. When I saw her, it was like the character in my head became the character in the book. She’s not someone you expect to be so strong.”

Tabitha has also written and published three adult horror short stories. Starting this Halloween until Halloween of 2016, she will be releasing one from that series every year. “In 2016, I’m going to put them all in a collection and publish them that way too. This series is called ‘The Corpses of Old Farmhill Road’… which is about an all-female serial killer family,” stated Short.

Tabitha would like the community to know, “I appreciate all the love and support that I have felt since I’ve gotten here this week. It has been completely overwhelming how many people here came out to the book signings and shared their support and bought books, and asked for autographs and take pictures. It’s just so good to come home and have people recognize you from a picture… and not knowing someone… I thought that was pretty cool.”

Local literary fans are urged to attend either the book signing in Muhlenberg or Hopkins County.
