Gene’s Health Food, Chamber Hold Ribbon Cutting for Deli Section

OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/11/13) --The Owensboro Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Gene’s Health Food’s deli on Thursday at their location on Sweeney Street.

Gene’s Health Food has been a locally-owned business in Owensboro for 32 years. Owned by Gene and Nancy Clark, the store is known for its gluten and allergy-free frozen foods, and supplements such as multi vitamins and weight loss pills, herbs, and homeopathic needles. More recently, though, the business’ deli has become a hot-spot with fresh sandwiches, original salads, humus, and more.

The Clarks’ grandson, Andrew Keller, is the general manager. Gene Clark said Keller is responsible for the growth of the store in recent years.

“He comes up with these ideas and I just say, ‘okay’,” said Clark.

The deli’s best-selling sandwich is the tuna salad sandwich. The deli wants to be a kick-start for their customers’ health.

“People may not know where to get healthy foods or how to eat healthily,” Keller said. “We wanted to show them that eating healthily is easy to do.”

Clark agreed. “We want to kick off health for the rest of your life,” Clark said.

Gene’s Health Food is located at 1738 Sweeney St. in Owensboro and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Sat. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and closed on Sunday.
