My Kentucky Roads: The Mandy Tree

MANDYtREE300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (10/15/13) – Although this tree no longer exists, the story remains very much alive. According to eyewitnesses, the “Mandy Tree” had the profile of a woman’s face outlined in the branches.

As the story is told, a lady named Mandy Holloman lived close to the tree where the tree stood off West Broadway Street. She was a much respected woman in the community and she was very dedicated to her family and her industry of housecleaning. Mandy also took pleasure from gardening and planted a small oak tree in her backyard.

Unfortunately, in the 1920s, Mandy Holloman’s life came to an end. She was shot to death in her own home. The murder took everyone by surprise and the community mourned her death.

As time passed, people went about their business, but one day a very strange thing happened; the tree Mandy planted began to grow and within its branches the profile of a woman appeared. Most people believed the profile was of Mandy Holloman.

For many years, the Mandy Tree retained the haunting profile but as the tree grew older, the image began to fade until it finally disappeared.

The tree gained such a wide acclaim and was presented in the “Ripley’s Believe it or Not.”

No one really knows why or what caused the strange phenomenon. Some people would say Mandy Holloman just didn’t want to be forgotten.
