Depoy: Neighbor Recalls Loving, Happy Watson Family, Night of Tragedy

watson prayer vigil and neighbor 1 31 14 001DEPOY, Ky. (2/1/14) — Bo Groves' house sits directly across the street from the charred rubble that was once the home of Chad and LaRae Watson, along with their nine children.

Groves told SurfKY News that he couldn't have asked for better neighbors.

"They were a happy, friendly family," Groves said. "The kids were always out in the yard laughing and playing. They just seemed to do everything together, and they would do anything for a neighbor."

Early Thursday morning, Groves was awakened by a loud banging on his front door.

"It was about 2 a.m. when I heard someone beating on the door,” said Groves. “When I opened it, there was Chad and one of his daughters, Kylie. They were in bad shape. I got them inside my house and came back out to see what I could do to help."

But by that time, Graham Fire Department Chief Duane Harvey was already on the scene. Even though Harvey and other fire fighters arrived within minutes of the 911 call, nothing could be done to save the other nine members of the Watson family.

"The fire just grew so fast, and there was so much smoke. I just felt helpless," said Groves.

Chad, 36, and Kylie, 11, are both in critical condition at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

Those, who perished in the tragic fire included LaRae, 35, Madison, 15; Kaitlyn, 14; Morgan, 13; Emily 9; Samuel, 8; Raegan, 6; and, twins Mark and Nathaniel, 4.

"I just pray God will be with Chad and his daughter, and the rest of their family and friends,” said Groves. “I know it's going to be rough on the father, but there's still one angel who survived, so my prayer is that they both pull through this somehow."
