My Kentucky Roads: Poppy & Clover

kyroadspoppy

KENTUCKY (2/15/14) — Located on the corner of Government and Dalton Road outside Providence, Ky., lies a 90-year-old general store that is now known as Poppy & Clover.

“The name came from my grandfather, my mom’s dad, that we called Poppy,” said owner Riley Jo Dever. “We use to sit in his yard for hours and hunt for clovers, it was something we did together, and then we would store the clovers in old books. So, that’s how we got the name ‘Poppy & Clover’.”

Originally named Taylor’s General Store, was built by Homer Felker in 1923 and ran by Peral Menser for the first 19 years, but eventually closed in the 1970s.

Then on Sept. 28, the newly remodeled store doors were reopened to the public.

“We tried to keep it as original as possible,” said Dever. “The roof and windows are new, but the counters and interior walls are original.”

Gina Boyd and Riley Jo Dever are a mother and daughter team, that has perfected the art of custom handmade goods and specializes in antiques, soy candles, soaps, pillows, chapsticks, deodorant and other charming hand-crafted offerings.

“The beauty about handmade products is that nothing is ever the same,” said Dever. “People will send in requests for us to make something that looks exactly like something they saw, but we have to tell them we will get as close to it as possible.”

Both Dever and Boyd are very compassionate about supporting local crafters and small businesses that are also passionate about what they do.

“We like to keep everything as local as possible,” said Dever. “Our candy is from Mt. Sterling and the beef jerky is from Dixon.”

Dever said that they are a family oriented business and encourage people to come in and visit with them.

“We are only open on select days,” said Dever. “It’s our hobby job, but it’s something we are very passionate about. We also encourage people to shop local when they can. You just never know what you will find.”

Poppy & Clover is located on 4075 Dalton Road.
