KSP Officer Involved in Dangerous Chase

kystatepoliceimage 300MAYFIELD, Ky. (3/4/14) — Kentucky State Police received a 911 call reporting a hit and run collision on US 45 North, in the south bound lane near Folsomdale, at around 8:06 a.m. March 1.

The suspect vehicle was reported to be a red, Dodge pickup truck that was driving very erratically and colliding with road signs.

After hearing the report over the radio, Sergeant Dean Patterson attempted to intercept the vehicle. He observed the suspect vehicle off Sawyer Road performing “donuts” in a residential yard. The operator returned to US 45 North and fled south bound. Sergeant Patterson activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the truck’s operator; however, the operator ignored these directives and continued southbound toward Mayfield, striking additional road signs, and driving from side to side of the highway.

Sergeant Patterson initiated a legal intervention technique to immobilize the fleeing vehicle before it could reach the city limits of Mayfield. This was successful and resulted in the fleeing vehicle being put into the grassy median. Trooper Michael Robichaud arrived and placed his vehicle in the south bound side of US 45 to block the path of the suspect vehicle from re-entering US 45. As Trooper Robichaud had to take immediate and evasive action to avoid being struck by the suspect vehicle. Damage to Trooper Robichaud’s 2012 Chevrolet cruiser was significant.

The suspect vehicle then rolled back to the bottom of the median, where the suspect operator was taken into custody. The driver appeared to be very intoxicated from unknown substances and was transported to the Jackson Purchase Medical Center where he was admitted.

Trooper Robichaud refused medical treatment at the scene, but was later transported to Jackson Purchase Medical Center where he was evaluated and treated for a minor injury to his lower leg.

The suspect operator was identified as Roger D. Englert, 54, of Paducah. He has pending charges including leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, criminal mischief third degree multiple counts, criminal mischief first degree, and criminal attempt to commit murder of a police officer.

The investigation is ongoing.
