colorblast2013 Color Blast 5k participants (Photo courtesy Color Blast 5k)OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/17/14) – The second year for a multi-agency 5k fun run and walk created to raise money for local disability services is set for Saturday at 8 a.m.

In its first year, Owensboro’s Color Blast drew roughly 4,000 participants and raised thousands of dollars for six agencies involved – Puzzle Pieces, Dream Riders of Kentucky, Two Rivers Buddy Ball, Team Karlie, Green River Area Downs Syndrome Association, and Wendell Foster Campus.

Amanda Owen, executive director of Puzzle Pieces, said the idea for the Color Blast was something she had heard of happening in larger cities through her involvement with Team Karlie, and wanted to develop for Owensboro. She said including all six agencies made sense.

“Nothing like this has been done before,” Owen said. “What’s important is that even though all six of us provide different services, we all serve the same clients. This is one event once a year when this community can support all of us and directly impact the kids.”

The event last year had a great deal of support from and participation by local students, but Owen said the heavy snowfall this year and the resulting high number of school day cancellations had impacted the effort to work with schools this year.

2013’s Color Blast was dubbed “the largest 5k in Owensboro,” but Owen said she didn’t expect to have as many participants this year because of the winter weather conditions in January and February.

  • As a result, the deadline to pre-register was extended through today (Monday).
  • The Color Blast this year starts and ends at Moreland Park.
  • Sign-in starts as early as 6:45 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m.
  • An after party is planned for approximately 9:15.
  • Stations along the route will “blast” runners with colored dye.
