Baptist Health Paducah 300PADUCAH, Ky. (5/5/14) — Jason Mick, RN, didn’t have to look far to find a good example when he started his nursing career at Baptist Health Paducah last year.

He turned to his mother, Kim Mick, RN, who has worked at Baptist almost 26 years, including during the time she was expecting Jason and his twin brother, Aaron.

Turns out she set the bar high, but Jason met the challenge. Mother and son were among a select group of nurses honored during a recent banquet. In celebration of Nurses Week, May 6-12, Baptist Health Paducah recognizes its entire nursing staff for their focus on quality and customer service to meet the needs of patients.

“I think it’s a first, (relatives) receiving an excellence award at the same time,” said Kim, palliative care coordinator. “Even though he’s new, I’m proud he’s already caught on to helping the needs of the patient and family. I guess it’s in the genes. You treat the patient and family like you would want to be treated.”

Jason, 24, who works on the third floor, surprised his parents when he decided to pursue nursing, but said interacting with patients and their family has been rewarding.

“I talk with them and try to get their minds off being here,” he said. “For a lot of people, it’s unfamiliar territory. I want to make sure they aren’t treated like just another room number.”

Other nurses honored for excellence in customer service were Betty Norwood, clinical informatics; Jessica Ingram, cath lab; Darla Turner, Emergency department; Kim Brown, outpatient chemotherapy; Jessica Holt, outpatient center; Blanche De Wolf, surgical recovery; Savannah Brown, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; Patricia Dawn Cole, second floor; Amy Byford, third floor; Alyce Steele, Intensive Care/Cardiac Care Unit; Robin Lampley and Kerri Peck, fourth floor; Tracy Thompson, Baptist Health Line; Regina Elliott, Home Health; and Alexandra Cole, BaptistWorx.

Nurses honored for excellence in quality were Tonya Edwards, education; Helen McNeil, Cardiac Rehab; Emily Robinson, Emergency department; Lisa Feldstein, radiation therapy; Jennifer Travis, outpatient center; Janice Hawkins, quality resources; Jennifer Rodgers, surgery; Katie Holton, labor and delivery; Rebecca Scott, obstetrics/pediatrics; Shirrell Ramey, second floor; Gwen Edwards and Megan Burcham, third floor; Kate Hughes, Intensive Care/Cardiac Care Unit; Nicole Walker and Dawn Mohler, fourth floor; Bonnie Bullard, Baptist Health Line; and Robin Pegram, Western Baptist Medical Ventures.

Three nurses chosen for special honors were Ashley Robbins, third floor, Charge Nurse of the Year; Carol Dodson, Pool Nurse of the Year, and Tammy Patton, House Supervisor of the Year.

“Nurses at Baptist Health Paducah are valued and recognized for their excellence in patient care delivery,” said Polly Bechtold, RN, vice president of nursing. “We strive to provide the nurses with an environment that promotes excellence and opportunity for growth and development. I am proud of these individual nurses for exemplifying quality and customer service.”
