truck-accidMCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. (7/18/14) — On July 17, 2014 at approximately 8:55 p.m., deputies with the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department responded to the intersection of Ogden Landing Road and Metropolis Lake Road for a pickup truck that had struck the building remains of Carneal Chapel.

Upon arrival, it was found that Elbert A. Harris, 83, of Goreville, Ill. was driving his 2001 Ford F-250 Pickup Truck East on Ogden Landing Road. Harris was in conversation with his passenger, James D. McKeller, 74, of Tunnel Hill Ill, as he approached the intersection of Metropolis Lake Road. Harris and McKeller had been fishing in the area and were unfamiliar with the roadways. Harris failed to stop at the stop sign and proceeded across Metropolis Lake Road. Harris then made contact with the concrete foundation and a large pile of debris of what was formerly Carneal Chapel. Harris and McKeller came to rest in the pile of debris.

Demolition of Carneal Chapel, 5916 Metropolis Lake Rd, had begun and the building was torn down. However, the concrete foundation was still in place as well as a large pile of debris that was awaiting to be hauled off.
